TP Solar produced 1 GW of solar modules and 0.9 GW of solar cells in the second quarter of FY27, marking a sharp increase in manufacturing activity at its Tirunelveli facility in Tamil Nadu, the Tata Power subsidiary said in a statement reported by The Hindu BusinessLine.
The company said its production during the first half of FY27, covering April to September, reached 2 GW of modules and 1.8 GW of cells. The output comes from one of India’s largest single-location solar cell and module manufacturing facilities, which has an installed capacity of 4.3 GW.
TP Solar said the modules produced at the plant comply with Domestic Content Requirement norms and are approved under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers. The certifications are relevant to India’s effort to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on imported components across the solar value chain.
The Tirunelveli facility is operated by TP Solar, the solar manufacturing arm of Tata Power. Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd has invested nearly Rs 4,300 crore in establishing the plant, according to the company. Tata Power said the investment supports the indigenisation of solar manufacturing and its strategy of building domestic capacity for both cells and modules.
The facility produces modules using advanced TOPCon and Mono PERC technologies. It also manufactures ALMM-certified modules and Domestic Content Requirement modules using cells made at the same plant. These capabilities allow the facility to produce both cells and modules within an integrated manufacturing setup, according to the company statement.
The plant also uses artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems, along with Automated Guided Vehicles, as part of its manufacturing operations. Tata Power described the facility as an example of next-generation manufacturing, combining intelligent automation with operational efficiency.
Beyond production capacity, the facility has a significant employment dimension. Nearly 80 per cent of its workforce comprises women, the company said, presenting the plant as an example of a large industrial operation built around an inclusive workforce. The statement did not provide the total number of employees at the facility.
The plant’s output is tied to the wider expansion of India’s domestic solar manufacturing base. Cells and modules are critical components in solar power projects, and the availability of locally manufactured equipment affects procurement, project compliance and the development of an indigenous supply chain. However, the company statement did not disclose sales volumes, order bookings, revenue from the facility or the proportion of production currently allocated to specific projects.
TP Solar said the Tirunelveli facility supports Tata Power’s commitment to local manufacturing and India’s stated net-zero carbon objective. The latest production figures indicate the scale at which the plant is operating during the first half of FY27, while its 4.3 GW capacity provides room for production to expand subject to demand and operational requirements.
