A worker was seriously injured after a Jaguar car crashed into a fuel dispenser at a petrol station near Attibele on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, triggering a fire that spread across the station, police said. No deaths were reported in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday night.
According to police, the car was being driven by Sanjay, a resident of Kudlu village, who had stopped at the station to fill up fuel. A station worker reportedly asked him to move the vehicle slightly so it could be positioned near the pump.
Police said Sanjay allegedly put the Jaguar into reverse but pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The vehicle then struck the fuel dispenser, setting off the fire. The flames from the car subsequently spread across the petrol station.
Sanjay and a female friend travelling with him got out of the vehicle immediately and escaped, police said. The station worker was injured in the fire and was reported to be in serious condition. The source report did not provide details about the worker’s current medical status or the extent of damage to the fuel station.
The incident required a coordinated response from fire services in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu because the station is located near the state border. Fire engines from the two states were deployed and extinguished the blaze, according to the report.
The collision highlights the immediate safety risks at fuel stations, where a vehicle impact involving a dispenser can rapidly escalate into a fire. The supplied report does not specify whether the station’s fuel supply was isolated, how long the facility remained closed or whether any nearby properties were affected.
Attibele police took Sanjay into custody and began investigating the circumstances of the crash. Police are expected to establish how the vehicle was being manoeuvred, assess the cause of the collision and document the injuries and property damage as part of the investigation.
