Telangana Medical Colleges Get ₹379 Crore Centre Funding Boost

Telangana medical colleges receiving funding for expanded hospital and education infrastructure

The Centre has approved ₹379.29 crore to develop Telangana’s government medical colleges and affiliated hospitals, following the addition of 465 postgraduate seats across 26 institutions over the past two years.

The Union health ministry communicated the approval on Thursday after clearing proposals submitted by the Telangana government under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, according to the state health minister’s office. The funding will support infrastructure linked to the expansion of postgraduate medical education in the state.

The Centre’s allocation works out to an average of ₹81.57 lakh for each additional postgraduate seat. Alongside the central contribution, the Telangana government will provide ₹253 crore, taking the combined investment for the medical colleges and their affiliated hospitals to about ₹632 crore.

The funding comes as Telangana expands the capacity of its government medical education network. The state has added 465 postgraduate seats across 26 government medical colleges over a two-year period, increasing the infrastructure requirements for teaching, training and hospital services at these institutions.

The National Medical Commission has also approved an increase of 110 MBBS seats at RIMS Adilabad and government medical colleges in Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar and Siddipet. The additional undergraduate seats will require infrastructure upgrades at the four colleges and their affiliated hospitals.

The Telangana government will undertake improvement works worth ₹108 crore at these institutions. Of this amount, the Centre will provide ₹64 crore, according to the information released by the minister’s office.

The approvals combine two linked expansions in the state’s public medical system: increased postgraduate capacity across 26 government colleges and additional undergraduate seats at four institutions. The associated funding is intended for the development of the colleges and hospitals that support medical education and public healthcare delivery.

The announcement does not specify the individual projects, construction schedules or completion timelines for the proposed infrastructure works. Further implementation details will depend on the state government’s execution of the approved proposals and the release of the respective central and state contributions.
