One person was killed and several others were injured after unidentified assailants opened fire inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which spans parts of Mumbai and Thane, in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.
The shooting took place in the park’s Chena beat in the Yeoor Range, Thane. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, one of the largest protected green spaces within the Mumbai metropolitan region, has areas administered across the two districts.
After receiving information about the incident, personnel from the Forest Department and police teams went to the location to inspect the site, according to the police. Investigators found bloodstains deep inside the forest area, approximately 450 metres from the forest boundary.
The deceased is believed to be a resident of Belkari Pada, an area within the jurisdiction of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation. Police have not yet officially established the identities of the deceased and the injured people, or confirmed the complete sequence of events.
The motive behind the firing also remains unknown. The assailants have been described as unidentified, and the supplied report does not state whether any arrests have been made or whether the weapon used in the shooting has been recovered.
The incident has led to a joint inquiry by the Forest Department and officers from the local Kashigaon Police Station. Teams are examining the forest location and gathering details about how the victims reached the area and what preceded the firing, officials said.
The location of the shooting, deep inside the Yeoor Range and away from the forest boundary, places the investigation within a protected landscape that is also connected to densely populated urban settlements in the Mumbai metropolitan region. Access, jurisdiction and coordination between forest authorities and local police are therefore part of the ongoing official response, although authorities have not released further operational details.
Officials said further clarity on the incident would emerge as the investigation progresses. The police and Forest Department have not yet announced the identities of all those involved, the motive, or the next steps in the criminal investigation.
