Lohgaon Hospital Opening Delayed Despite Staff and Ambulances Ready

Lohgaon hospital building in Pune awaiting inauguration approval

The opening of Pune’s Lohgaon sub-district hospital has been delayed despite the completion of its building, recruitment of most staff and readiness of ambulances, with the facility still awaiting permission for its inauguration. Officials said a request for approval was sent to the concerned authorities on September 11, but no response had been received by October 19.

The delay means residents of Lohgaon and Wagholi must continue travelling to existing government hospitals for treatment. The new hospital is expected to provide healthcare closer to these rapidly expanding areas and reduce pressure on Sassoon General Hospital, Pune Municipal Corporation-run hospitals and Aundh District Hospital, which are already handling a large number of patients.

According to the information reported by Punekar News, construction of the hospital building has been completed. Preparations required to make the facility operational have also been completed, indicating that the pending inauguration clearance is currently the stated barrier to opening the hospital to patients.

Staffing has progressed substantially, with around 90% of recruitment completed. Ambulances linked to the 108 and 102 emergency services are also ready to provide patient care once the hospital begins operations. These services are intended to support emergency response and patient transport connected with the facility.

The hospital’s location is significant for residents who currently face long journeys to access government healthcare. Lohgaon and Wagholi are served by hospitals located outside the immediate neighbourhoods of many residents, and the absence of a nearby public facility can make routine treatment, emergency care and hospital referrals more difficult. The new sub-district hospital is intended to address part of that access gap.

The reported delay also highlights the difference between completing construction and commissioning a public facility. A building can be ready, while approvals, staffing and operational authorisations still determine when citizens can use it. In this case, officials have indicated that staffing and ambulance arrangements are largely in place, but the inauguration approval has not yet been received.

No response to the September 11 request had been received more than one-and-a-half months later, according to the officials cited in the report. The hospital will become operational after the required permission is secured and the inauguration process is completed.
