A 37-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were rescued after falling into a gorge at Tiger Point in Lonavala on Sunday, with local shopkeepers using ropes to bring them to safety before they were taken to hospital by ambulance.
The Shivdurg Rescue Team, Lonavala, received information about the incident around noon, according to team member Sunil Gaikwad. He said he immediately informed the Lonavala Rural Police and alerted an ambulance while the rescue team assembled equipment and travelled to the location.
The two people could be heard shouting for help, Gaikwad said. By the time the rescue team reached the site, the ambulance had arrived and local shopkeepers had used ropes to pull the woman and the girl out of the gorge.
The injured woman and child were subsequently shifted to a hospital for treatment. The source report did not provide details about the extent of their injuries or identify the two victims by name.
Gaikwad credited the local shopkeepers’ quick response with helping save both lives. “Our team had reached the location, but the local people’s timely assistance helped save the lives of both of them,” he said.
The operation involved members of the Shivdurg Rescue Team, including Sagar Kumbhar, Sagar Dalvi, Kapil Dalvi, Siddhesh Kute, Aniket Ghardale, Aniket Ambekar, Ayush Vartak, Karan Ware, Yogesh Umbare, Aditi Gaikwad, Ganesh Bhangare, Pranay Ambure, Samarth Gambhir, Mahadev Bhawar, Pintu Mankar, Prabhakar Bhalerao, Manohar Dhakole and Sunil Gaikwad.
Tiger Point is a popular tourist location in Lonavala, where steep terrain and gorge edges can make emergency access difficult. The incident also highlighted the importance of rapid coordination between local residents, volunteer rescue teams, police and ambulance services at tourist sites.
Lonavala Rural Police are investigating the circumstances of the fall. Further details about the victims’ condition and the investigation were not immediately available.
