Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation BJP corporator Jitendra Chauhan locked the office of an assistant city engineer in Shahpur on Friday, October 9, 2026, alleging that sewerage, water supply and ward-budget works had not been completed despite repeated representations. He also demanded the municipal commissioner’s resignation and warned that other civic offices could be locked if the pending works were not taken up.
The office is located near the Dudheswar water tank and falls within the Shahpur ward. Chauhan said residents from local chawls and other parts of the ward had been repeatedly approaching him with complaints about sewerage and water problems, but that the issues had not been resolved despite representations to municipal officials.
According to Chauhan, some project-related works have remained incomplete for between six and eight months. He also alleged that works to be carried out from the corporator’s budget were still pending. He said the office was locked to register his protest over the lack of progress.
Shahpur is described in the report as an area with a large working-class and slum population, where interruptions or deficiencies in basic services can directly affect households. The complaints raised by the corporator relate to sewerage, water supply and incomplete local development works, all of which fall within the day-to-day responsibilities of municipal administration.
Chauhan said he had also raised the matter with Dariapur MLA Kaushik Jain, but alleged that officials had not acted even after the legislator’s intervention. He said he had not made a direct representation to the mayor or the chairman of the standing committee, although he claimed that the pending works had been raised during committee meetings without producing a solution.
The corporator further alleged irregularities in road and footpath works and sought a vigilance inquiry against the officials concerned. He also called for an investigation into officials’ assets and the sources of their income. These are allegations made by Chauhan, and the report did not include a response from the municipal authorities or the officials named in connection with the works.
The protest has also brought scrutiny to the functioning of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s local works system. The report noted that the BJP has governed the corporation for the past 20 years and that 160 BJP corporators have been elected. Chauhan’s complaint therefore represents an internal challenge over the delivery of ward-level works within the ruling party’s municipal administration.
Chauhan said that if the pending works were not undertaken, he would consider locking other municipal offices as well. The immediate next step indicated in the report is the corporation’s response to the complaints and whether the incomplete sewerage, water and budget-funded works in Shahpur are taken up.
