Delhi Protest Disrupts Rail Travel as Ahmedabad Rajdhani Cancelled

Ahmedabad Rajdhani Express cancellation affecting rail travel to Delhi

Indian Railways has cancelled train number 12957 Sabarmati–New Delhi Swarn Jayanti Rajdhani Express scheduled to depart from Ahmedabad on October 9, citing passenger safety and the risk of severe traffic disruption in Delhi during opposition-led demonstrations on October 10.

The cancellation forms part of a contingency plan for trains scheduled to reach New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10. According to the report, the Delhi Traffic Police has advised that roads around the two railway stations could face closures and heavy congestion during the protest and possible road blockade.

Railway authorities said the precautionary measure is intended to prevent passengers from being stranded in traffic or missing their trains. A similar disruption during an earlier protest reportedly left around 5,000 passengers unable to reach railway stations on time, resulting in missed trains.

The Ahmedabad–New Delhi Rajdhani is among several mail and express services cancelled from their originating stations. The affected list for trains departing on October 9 includes train number 12247 from Bandra Terminus to Hazrat Nizamuddin, train number 12957 from Sabarmati to New Delhi, train number 20155 from Dr Ambedkar Nagar to New Delhi, train number 09309 from Indore to Hazrat Nizamuddin and train number 12415 from Indore to New Delhi.

The disruption affects passengers beginning journeys in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Indore, as well as those travelling towards central Delhi. Since the cancellations are being implemented from the originating stations, passengers have been advised to check their train status before leaving home rather than relying on station-level updates after starting their journey.

The railway administration has asked passengers to use the official railway website or helpline to confirm cancellations, rescheduling and other operational changes. The source report also states that trains departing after 2 pm on October 9 and scheduled to arrive in Delhi during the affected window on October 10 have been covered by the contingency arrangements. Further passenger movement will depend on the traffic and security conditions around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations.
