The Rameswaram airport project has moved into a crucial approval stage after the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) applied to the Civil Aviation Ministry for site clearance for an airport at Manickaneri in Ramanathapuram district, according to a report by Dinamalar.
The proposed airport is intended to improve access to Rameswaram and other important destinations in the district, including the Ramanathaswamy Temple and Dhanushkodi. Ramanathapuram currently depends on road and rail links, and the state government has cited the need to reduce travel time for pilgrims and tourists arriving from across India and abroad.
Five locations were identified and assessed for the project before the Airports Authority of India recommended Manickaneri as the preferred site, the report said. The proposed airport is planned across 600 acres, and the land acquisition process has begun.
TIDCO is the state agency responsible for implementing projects of this nature in Tamil Nadu. Its application for site clearance is a formal step in the airport approval process. Site clearance, also referred to as location approval, allows the aviation authorities to assess whether a proposed site is suitable for airport development.
The application does not amount to final approval for construction or operations. The report said that site clearance and in-principle approval are among the important permissions required before an airport can be developed. Even after construction is completed, the facility would require a separate operational licence before flights can begin.
The sequence means that the proposed Rameswaram airport remains at the planning and approval stage. The next decisions will involve the Civil Aviation Ministry’s consideration of the site-clearance application and subsequent approvals required for the project to proceed.
The project’s stated rationale is closely linked to the district’s religious and tourism economy. Rameswaram is a major pilgrimage destination, while Dhanushkodi draws visitors because of its coastal landscape and historical significance. Better air connectivity could provide an additional travel option for visitors, although the report does not specify a construction schedule, estimated project cost, terminal capacity or proposed flight network.
The land acquisition process will also be a significant implementation milestone because the proposed site covers 600 acres. The report does not provide details on the parcels involved, compensation arrangements or the number of landowners affected. Those details will become important as the project moves from location planning towards development.
For now, the immediate development is TIDCO’s application for site clearance. The proposed airport must still secure the required approvals, be constructed and obtain permission to operate before it can serve passengers.
