A high-tension power line killed two people and injured 14 after a meeting tent came into contact with the overhead wire in Renanda village of Rajasthan’s Pratapgarh district on Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred before the start of a Congress meeting convened to discuss preparations for the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections. The meeting was expected to draw between 150 and 200 people, according to the report.
Pratapgarh superintendent of police Vishal Jangid confirmed that two people had died and 14 others were injured. The deceased were identified as Mohan Meena and Arjun Meena.
Police said strong winds caused the tent to sway at the site. As people attempted to hold the structure in place by gripping its structural pipes, the tent came into contact with the overhead high-tension line, resulting in the electrocution.
The incident highlights the immediate safety risks created when temporary public gathering structures are installed close to overhead electricity infrastructure. The available report does not specify the voltage of the line, the distance between the tent and the wire, whether the site had been inspected before the meeting, or which agency had approved the temporary installation.
The injured people were taken by ambulance to Pratapgarh district hospital, where they were undergoing treatment. Police did not provide further details on the severity of their injuries or the condition of those receiving care.
The meeting had been scheduled in connection with preparations for the Panchayati Raj elections. No further information was provided in the report about whether the gathering was formally permitted, whether electricity supply was interrupted after the incident, or whether any inquiry or compensation process had been announced.
The injured remain under treatment at Pratapgarh district hospital, while the police confirmation and hospital response constitute the latest official information available on the incident.
