Perumbavoor Road Flooding Disrupts School Route After Rain

Perumbavoor road flooding outside St Anne’s Convent School after rain

Perumbavoor road flooding disrupted movement outside St Anne’s Convent School in Aymuri after rain on Thursday evening, with water covering the road and making night travel difficult for pedestrians, schoolchildren and visitors to a nearby shopping complex, according to a report by Mathrubhumi – Kochi.

The road in front of the school reportedly turned into what residents described as a stream after the rainfall. The waterlogging affected people travelling through the stretch at night and created particular difficulty for children and those walking along the road.

The report attributed the flooding to deficiencies in the road construction and the absence of roadside drains. With no effective drainage channel to carry away rainwater, water accumulated on the carriageway in front of the school. People visiting the adjacent shopping complex were reportedly forced to wade through the flooded stretch to reach the premises.

The location had experienced a recurring waterlogging problem earlier as well. For years, flooding was reported in front of a nearby Union Bank branch. The road level was subsequently raised and cement blocks were laid in an attempt to address the problem at that point.

However, the report said the waterlogging has now shifted to the area in front of the school. This suggests that the earlier intervention changed the point at which water accumulated without resolving the drainage problem across the wider stretch. The supplied report does not provide details of the agency responsible for the road, the cost of the earlier work or whether a new drainage project has been approved.

The affected section serves more than passing traffic. It is located beside a school and near a shopping complex, bringing pedestrians, children, bank customers and other local users into contact with the flooded road during periods of rain. The immediate problem is therefore both a mobility disruption and a safety concern for people who have to cross the waterlogged surface.

The report did not mention any official inspection, emergency pumping operation or announced repair schedule. It also did not establish whether the road construction was formally found to be defective. The immediate civic issue remains the absence of a drainage solution capable of preventing rainwater from collecting at successive points along the road. Further action would need to address both the flooded section outside the school and the earlier waterlogging location near the bank.
