PCMC’s ₹113-Crore Road Makeover Targets Grand Tour 2027

PCMC road makeover works along a Pimpri-Chinchwad urban corridor with cycle tracks and improved lighting

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has begun preparing a ₹113-crore road and streetscape upgrade covering 113 kilometres ahead of the Pune Grand Tour 2027, with resurfacing, junction improvements, cycle tracks, lighting and signage planned along key routes.

The second edition of the cycling event is scheduled from January 26 to 31, 2027. According to the civic body, the event is expected to receive live international broadcast coverage, bringing attention to Pimpri-Chinchwad’s roads, junctions and public spaces.

The fourth phase of the beautification project will cover routes and locations including the stretch between Alandi and Lonavala, Gandhi Peth, Prabhat Colony, the Chapekar Chowk underpass, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Dr DY Patil International University, Nigdi, Bhosale Chowk, the MIDC area, Hinjawadi IT Park, Wakad, Dange Chowk and Baner. These areas include industrial, information technology and residential districts with heavy daily movement.

Bapusaheb Gaikwad, joint city engineer at PCMC, said the expenditure would not be limited to hosting the sporting event and that the infrastructure improvements would provide lasting benefits to residents. The civic body plans to develop major roads, junctions, bridges and public spaces along the cycling route in accordance with standards set by the Union Cycliste Internationale, the international governing body for cycling.

The planned road works include resurfacing and concreting sections along the route to create safer and smoother surfaces for cyclists. PCMC also plans to repair and repaint barricades along Bus Rapid Transit corridors, develop modern cycle tracks, repair speed breakers and improve zebra crossings for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.

High-tech directional signs and traffic information boards are proposed at important locations to help road users navigate the routes. Street lighting is also scheduled for improvement so that the corridors are better illuminated at night. The project will therefore combine event preparation with upgrades to everyday street infrastructure, although the supplied report does not provide a detailed work-wise budget or completion schedule.

The first Pune Grand Tour featured 171 cyclists from 35 countries. The upcoming edition is expected to be larger and could bring additional activity for hotels, transport operators and local businesses, while creating work connected to event management and infrastructure upgrades. The immediate implementation milestone is the completion of the planned road, junction, cycle-track, signage and lighting works before the January 2027 event.
