A Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector was killed after a Haryana Roadways bus collided with his scooter in the Nangloi area of outer Delhi while he was travelling to work, police said. The bus driver and conductor fled after leaving the vehicle at the scene, and investigators have seized the bus while efforts to identify and arrest them continue.
The deceased officer was identified as Rajesh Kumar, who was posted at Mandir Marg police station in New Delhi district. According to a senior police officer cited in the report, Kumar was riding his scooter at around 7 am to report for duty when the collision took place in outer Delhi.
Kumar suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said. The hospital is one of the major public medical facilities serving parts of northwest and outer Delhi, making the immediate response and movement of seriously injured road-crash victims a key part of the investigation into the incident.
Police said the Haryana Roadways bus was abandoned at the spot after the collision. The driver and conductor reportedly escaped before they could be detained. Investigators have taken the vehicle into custody as part of the inquiry and are working to establish the identities and whereabouts of the two crew members.
The police informed Kumar’s family about his death. His son, Tushar, told journalists that his father was an assistant sub-inspector with the Delhi Police and was posted at Mandir Marg police station. He also said the family learnt about the crash after receiving a call from the police.
The incident occurred during the morning period when commuters, public transport vehicles and two-wheeler riders share arterial roads across the outer Delhi region. The available report does not provide details about the exact road junction, the speed of either vehicle, traffic conditions, road design, CCTV footage or whether any formal traffic violations had been recorded before the collision.
Those facts are expected to form part of the continuing investigation. Police have said that efforts are under way to identify and arrest the Haryana Roadways bus driver and conductor. The seized bus is likely to remain central to the inquiry as investigators examine the circumstances of the collision and determine responsibility.
