Mumbai Metro is proactively implementing comprehensive contingency plans to ensure the safety and uninterrupted service of its network.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has outlined several measures to address potential challenges posed by heavy rainfall and flooding. In response to recent flooding incidents, such as the submergence of the Acharya Atre Chowk station on Line 3, MMRDA has initiated the construction of a permanent protection wall to safeguard the station against future extreme weather events. This proactive approach aims to prevent similar occurrences and ensure the resilience of the metro infrastructure. Furthermore, MMRDA has established a 24×7 control room to address issues related to uprooted trees, waterlogging, accidents, traffic snarls, potholes, and other concerns associated with metro projects. This initiative is designed to minimize inconvenience to residents and commuters during the monsoon season.
To enhance emergency response capabilities, MMRDA has deployed over 300 engineers and workers across metro sites. Additionally, 19 emergency response teams, each comprising an engineer and 10 workers, are on standby to swiftly address any emergencies. The authority has also stationed 131 de-watering pumps across project sites to ensure efficient drainage and prevent water accumulation. In collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), MMRDA is coordinating efforts to facilitate smooth passenger evacuation and provide immediate alternative transport options in case of disruptions at high-footfall stations like Andheri and Ghatkopar. This coordinated approach aims to minimize inconvenience to commuters during adverse weather conditions.
The implementation of these contingency plans reflects Mumbai Metro’s commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of its passengers during the monsoon season. By proactively addressing potential challenges and coordinating with relevant authorities, MMRDA aims to maintain seamless metro operations and enhance the resilience of the city’s public transportation infrastructure.
