Ahmedabad Launches Gujarat’s Largest Waste-to-Energy Plant

Ahmedabad has inaugurated Gujarat’s largest waste-to-energy (WTE) plant, located in Piplaj.

This facility, developed at a cost of ₹375 crore under a public-private partnership with Jindal Urban Waste Management Limited, is set to revolutionize the city’s waste management and energy production. The plant employs advanced Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)-based Martin Reverse Grate Firing Technology to incinerate municipal solid waste. This process generates 65 tons per hour (TPH) of steam, which drives a turbine to produce 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity per hour, totaling 360 MW daily. The electricity is supplied to the grid, contributing to the state’s renewable energy capacity .

By processing 1,000 metric tons of waste daily, the plant prevents the release of approximately 150,000 kg of methane and 650,000 kg of carbon dioxide annually, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the facility utilizes treated sewage water for its operations, conserving 3 million liters of clean water daily and generating an annual income of ₹50 lakh for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) .

The inauguration of the WTE plant complements ongoing efforts to remediate the Pirana Dumpsite, a 84-acre landfill that has accumulated over 12.5 million metric tons of waste. Through biomining operations, significant progress has been made in processing legacy waste, with 35 acres of land cleared, transforming the area into a cleaner and safer environment .

This initiative positions Ahmedabad as a leader in integrating waste management with renewable energy production. The WTE plant not only addresses the city’s waste disposal challenges but also contributes to its energy needs, setting a precedent for other urban centers in India. By embracing innovative technologies and sustainable practices, Ahmedabad is paving the way for a greener, more resilient future.
