Mumbai Metro begins EV swaps at 31 stations

Mumbai has introduced electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping stations at 31 Metro and Monorail locations.

This initiative, a collaboration between Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) and Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, aims to enhance convenience for EV users and promote eco-friendly transportation. The battery-swapping stations, equipped with Honda’s advanced E:swap technology, are strategically installed at 25 Metro stations on Lines 2A and 7, and six Monorail stations. These facilities enable users of Honda-compatible electric two- and three-wheelers to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in under two minutes, effectively addressing range anxiety and reducing downtime

Key locations include Gundavali, Andheri West, Malad West, Dahisar East, Goregaon East, and Monorail stations such as Chembur, Wadala, Naigaon, and Mint Colony. The first operational E:swap station at Dahisar East marks Mumbai as one of the pioneering Indian cities integrating battery swapping with public transport infrastructure. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative is projected to generate approximately ₹30 lakh in non-fare box revenue for MMMOCL, contributing to the financial sustainability of Mumbai’s mass transit system. This move aligns with MMMOCL’s broader Electric Vehicle Policy, emphasizing the development of a sustainable, low-emission urban environment.

However, urban planners have raised concerns about the placement of these stations on pedestrian footpaths, cautioning that it may impede pedestrian movement in already congested areas. Experts suggest that authorities should consider alternative locations to balance infrastructure development with pedestrian safety. As Mumbai continues to evolve its transportation landscape, the integration of EV battery-swapping stations represents a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility, balancing technological advancement with environmental consciousness.
