Mumbai COVID Cases Rise to 509 in May

Mumbai is witnessing a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, with 509 reported since May. This surge has prompted health authorities to intensify surveillance and preparedness measures across the city.

Maharashtra, the state encompassing Mumbai, has recorded 14 COVID-19-related deaths, the highest in the country during this period. The majority of the recent fatalities in Maharashtra have been among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, diabetes, chronic renal failure, ischemic heart disease, and tuberculosis. In Mumbai, three deaths have been reported, all involving patients with severe co-morbidities. Health experts have noted that most patients, even those with co-morbidities, are recovering. However, the rise in cases has led to increased vigilance. The state health department has instructed civic bodies to conduct mock drills of all pressure swing absorption oxygen plants to ensure readiness.

In Mumbai, patients with COVID-19 and co-morbidities at civic hospitals are being referred to Seven Hills Hospital for further treatment and isolation. In the Vasai-Virar region, the City Municipal Corporation has initiated continuous screening for influenza-like illness (ILI). As of the latest reports, 225 suspected patients were identified out of 6,973 screened, with six testing positive for COVID-19. One patient was hospitalized and later discharged, while the remaining five are in home isolation with mild symptoms. The screening aligns with state guidelines directing civic bodies to maintain surveillance for ILI and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection.

Nationwide, India has reported 4,302 active COVID-19 cases, with Maharashtra accounting for 510 active cases and 14 deaths. Kerala follows with 1,373 cases and nine deaths. The Union Health Ministry has emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to COVID-19 protocols to mitigate the spread of the virus. The recent uptick in cases underscores the need for sustained public health measures and community awareness. Authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious, practice appropriate hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms arise. The situation continues to evolve, and health departments are closely monitoring developments to implement necessary interventions.
