MRPL Fire Accident Causes ₹118.76 Crore Damage in Mangaluru

MRPL fire accident site at the Mangaluru refinery complex

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has reported that a fire accident at its refinery complex on the outskirts of Mangaluru caused damage estimated at ₹118.76 crore, with restoration of the affected facilities expected to cost about ₹225 crore.

The incident occurred on September 30 at the Coker Hydrotreater Unit (CHTU) in Phase Three of the refinery complex, according to a report submitted by the company to the stock exchanges after a board meeting on Wednesday. MRPL said the loss estimate was based on damage to property, the production unit and machinery.

The company’s disclosure described the incident as a fire accident. Earlier reports had referred to an explosion at the CHTU, but the stock exchange filing cited in the report did not use that description. The disclosure also stated that all the damaged components were insured.

The estimated ₹225 crore restoration cost is higher than the assessed damage because it covers the rebuilding or reinstatement of the affected facilities, equipment and production infrastructure. The company’s filing, as reported by Prajavani, did not provide a detailed timeline for completion of the restoration work or specify when the affected unit would return to full operation.

The CHTU is part of the refinery’s processing infrastructure. Damage to such a unit can affect the availability of connected production systems, although the report did not quantify the accident’s impact on MRPL’s overall operating capacity. The company reported total production of 4.18 million tonnes in the period, compared with 4.43 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

Alongside the accident disclosure, MRPL reported a sharp increase in revenue for the second quarter of the financial year. The company recorded revenue of ₹1,881 crore during the quarter, compared with ₹639 crore in the same period last year, representing a 194% increase, according to the report. Revenue for the first six months was stated as ₹2,796 crore.

The board also approved the company’s half-yearly financial accounts. MRPL reported operating-related income of ₹35,590 crore during the six-month period, including ₹6,327 crore from exports, compared with ₹25,953 crore during the corresponding period last year. The figures in the company’s disclosure were reported alongside the production data and the assessment of the fire-related loss.

The incident places the condition and restoration of a critical refinery processing unit under the company’s next operational milestones. MRPL’s insurance coverage, the detailed restoration plan and any subsequent update on the affected CHTU will determine how the damage is managed and when the unit’s operations are normalised.
