Malkajgiri Steps Up Water Conservation Plans Amid El Niño Risk

Malkajgiri water conservation efforts involving treated sewage water and urban green spaces

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has directed officials to prepare for possible water scarcity linked to El Niño concerns, with measures focused on improving water distribution, reducing wastage and expanding the use of treated sewage water across construction sites and green spaces.

Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy issued the directions during a coordination meeting with Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials at the corporation office in Tarnaka on Thursday. The meeting focused on preparing the municipal area for potential supply gaps and identifying alternative sources of water.

Officials have been asked to draw up plans to bridge shortages and ensure that available water is used efficiently. The directions cover households, commercial establishments, construction sites, parks and other areas where water consumption can be reduced through conservation and better management.

The corporation will also conduct extensive public awareness programmes to discourage water wastage. The commissioner called for public participation in conservation efforts, including reducing unnecessary consumption, reusing treated water and using available resources more efficiently.

A key part of the plan is to reduce dependence on potable water for activities that do not require drinking-quality supplies. Construction firms have been encouraged to use treated water from sewage treatment plants wherever possible. Officials have also been directed to explore the use of treated sewage water for irrigating parks, green belts and other green spaces.

The proposed approach places water distribution and wastewater reuse alongside public awareness as part of the corporation’s preparedness measures. It also brings construction and landscape maintenance into the municipal water-conservation strategy, potentially limiting the use of potable water for non-potable purposes.

The corporation has not announced a specific supply shortfall, implementation deadline or volume target in the information available. Its immediate next steps are to prepare plans for possible gaps, examine alternative water sources, coordinate with HMWSSB officials and expand awareness activities across Malkajgiri.
