A woman was killed and her husband critically injured after an SUV allegedly driven at high speed by a medical student rammed their motorcycle near Amistapur village in Mahbubnagar district late on Friday night. Their five-year-old daughter, who was travelling with them, suffered minor injuries.
The collision occurred at around 1 am near UPS School in Amistapur, within Bhoothpur municipality, as the family was travelling towards Mahbubnagar to attend a relative’s wedding. Police said the SUV was approaching from the Bhoothpur side when it allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind, throwing all three occupants onto the road.
The woman, identified as Shahana Begum, 40, died at the spot. Her husband, Mohammed Shakir, a tailor from Amistapur, suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs and remained in critical condition, according to the report. Both Shakir and his daughter Ayara were shifted to Mahbubnagar district general hospital.
Police arrested Nithin, 22, a third-year medical student who was driving the SUV. Bhoothpur circle inspector S Rama Krishna said two SUVs carrying six government medical students from Mahbubnagar were travelling at high speed when the accident took place. Police confirmed that the vehicles were overspeeding but said there was no evidence so far that the students were racing.
The inspector also said the students were returning after attending a function and were not found to be under the influence of alcohol. The police account has not established the exact circumstances leading to the collision or the role of all occupants of the two SUVs.
According to local residents who witnessed the crash, occupants of the SUV that struck the motorcycle allegedly attempted to leave the scene by boarding the second vehicle after abandoning the damaged SUV. Residents reportedly chased them and prevented them from escaping before alerting the police.
Bhoothpur police reached the location, registered a case and began investigating the crash. The investigation will examine the sequence of events, the involvement of the occupants of both SUVs and the circumstances surrounding the alleged speeding. Police are also continuing to establish the precise circumstances of the collision.
