Pune traffic police have proposed moving the main PMPML bus stop at Katraj Chowk another kilometre towards Wonder City, a change that could lengthen walking distances for commuters using the busy interchange. The proposal comes as metro and flyover construction continues to narrow road space and disrupt traffic arrangements at the junction.
The bus stop has already been shifted three times in the past two months, according to a report by Pune Mirror. If the latest proposal is implemented, passengers travelling from Katraj Chowk would have to walk farther along the bypass highway to board PMPML buses.
Katraj Chowk serves as an important interchange for passengers changing routes to reach different parts of Pune. Daily commuters told Pune Mirror that they had already been adjusting to repeated changes in bus-stop locations and the disruption caused by construction. Another relocation, they said, could make routine journeys more difficult, especially for passengers who depend on the junction to transfer between services.
The proposed shift is linked to congestion and safety challenges at the intersection. Ongoing metro work and construction of the proposed flyover have reduced the available road width, led to traffic diversions and limited the space where buses can stop safely. The junction is handling several infrastructure works at the same time, adding pressure to an already busy movement corridor.
The space previously used as the main PMPML bus stop has also been largely occupied by shared autorickshaws, further complicating the management of buses and passengers. With buses stopping in constrained areas, traffic police have proposed moving them away from the crowded intersection to improve traffic flow while construction continues.
The proposed relocation highlights the operational difficulty of carrying out major infrastructure work at a junction that also functions as a public transport interchange. Moving buses may create more room for traffic and construction activity, but it would also place the boarding point farther from passengers arriving at Katraj Chowk.
