IMD Heavy Rain Alert: South India Braces for Storms and Rain

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in parts of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Tuesday, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected across several other parts of India. The alert covers multiple regions and comes as rain activity is forecast to remain active across the country this week.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, according to the IMD forecast.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely to see thunderstorms and gusty winds, while coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka may receive thunderstorms and lightning. The forecast places the southern states at the centre of the immediate heavy-rain outlook, with further rain expected in several areas over the coming days.

In north India, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad are likely to see thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds along with isolated to scattered rain. Rain is expected to continue in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad in the coming days, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may remain wet through Saturday.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms and lightning in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and west Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. Gangetic West Bengal may receive thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Rain is expected over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the coming days.

The forecast extends to the northeast and island regions, where isolated to scattered rain is likely in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The IMD has also indicated that rain may increase in Konkan, Goa and central Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday.

The spread of the forecast places roads, public transport operations, outdoor work and local drainage systems across multiple regions under changing weather conditions. The IMD has identified thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and isolated heavy rain as the principal weather risks in different areas, but the supplied forecast does not specify city-level warnings or disruption advisories.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to remain active across several parts of the country through the week. The north, east and northeast are likely to continue receiving rain, while the south remains the main focus for heavy rain in the immediate outlook. Rain is also forecast to increase over parts of west India from Wednesday.
