Gachibowli traffic is facing a fresh bottleneck at IIIT Junction, where high-voltage transmission lines still run through the road alignment despite road-widening work and ongoing flyover construction. Commuters told Telangana Today that peak-hour delays can stretch to 30 minutes, with queues extending towards ISB Road, DLF Road and Lingampally.
The junction is a key connection between residential areas, the Financial District, Gachibowli and HITECH City. It handles nearly five lakh vehicles a day, according to the report, making the restricted road space a significant pressure point during office arrival and departure hours.
Transmission lines remain in the middle of the road on the extended stretch, while similar lines are visible on three other sides of the junction. Commuters said the alignment effectively forces traffic from four lanes into two, slowing vehicles to a crawl during peak periods.
P Rajeshwar Rao, a Manikonda resident who uses the road to travel to work, said the transmission lines had created a sudden narrowing after the road-widening works. He described the resulting congestion as particularly severe during IT office login and logout hours.
Cyberabad Municipal Corporation officials said road-widening work had been completed to improve traffic movement, but the shifting of the transmission lines had been delayed for several months. CMC Commissioner G Srijana told Telangana Today that Rs 7 crore had been deposited with the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited to shift the lines as flyover work progresses at IIIT Junction.
Officials said the matter was being pursued and that shifting the lines would help ease congestion on the stretch. The delay has also highlighted the dependence of the junction’s road and flyover works on electricity infrastructure relocation, leaving the widened carriageway unable to function as planned.
Other utility relocation work is also underway. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is shifting water and sewerage lines in view of the flyover construction. The water board recently carried out work at Khajaguda after shutting down the water supply system for the operation.
The planned junction improvements include a four-lane bidirectional flyover from ISB Road to DLF Road; a three-lane unidirectional flyover from DLF Road to Gachibowli Stadium; another three-lane unidirectional flyover from ISB Road to Gachibowli’s Indira Nagar; and a six-lane bidirectional underpass connecting Indira Nagar and Gachibowli Stadium. The shifting of the transmission lines remains the next required step for the affected alignment as construction advances.
