Dumboor Hydel Project Gets Rs 100-Crore Revival Plan After Flood Damage

Tripura has announced a Rs 100-crore plan to restore and modernise the Dumboor hydel project in Gomati district, with the damaged facility expected to generate 10–11 MW after the upgrade. Work is likely to begin by December 2026, officials said.

Power minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the plan during the ground-breaking ceremony for the restoration and modernisation project. The initiative is being taken up by the Tripura government in collaboration with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, which has completed a technical assessment of the facility.

The assessment is intended to identify the restoration and modernisation work required at the plant, officials said. Further detailed assessments and preparatory formalities are expected to be completed before construction begins.

The Dumboor project, Tripura’s only hydroelectric facility, originally had an installed capacity of 15 MW across three units. The plant was severely damaged in the floods of 2024. Following the proposed upgrade, its expected generation capacity will be about 10–11 MW, below its original installed capacity.

The project’s revival is part of the state’s effort to repair ageing power infrastructure and expand its renewable-energy capacity. The announcement also places the focus on the resilience of existing generation assets, particularly after severe flooding damaged the facility.

Tripura is a power-surplus state, with gas-based thermal generation accounting for a major share of its electricity production. The Dumboor project’s restoration will therefore add back a smaller hydroelectric source to the state’s generation mix rather than address an immediate power shortage.

The project’s next stage involves completing the detailed technical assessment and other formalities. Officials have indicated that restoration and modernisation work is likely to start by December 2026.
