Delhi Sanitation Gets Major MCD Boost With 612 New Vehicles

Delhi sanitation services received a major municipal equipment boost on October 17, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurating new waste-collection and cleaning resources in Sarita Vihar for use across South-East Delhi and the capital’s 250 wards.

The rollout includes 428 auto tippers, 128 e-rickshaws and 25 Tata 407 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection in 25 wards of South-East Delhi. The equipment is intended to improve collection in densely populated areas and narrow lanes, where larger vehicles can face operational limitations.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also provided 27 refuse compactors, five refuse collectors and 30 hook loaders to transport collected waste. In addition, 100 compactor bins have been made available for the organised storage and collection of garbage before it is moved onward.

According to the details shared at the launch, the new vehicles and equipment are meant to make waste collection more regular and improve the movement of garbage from local collection points. Officials said the resources would help address sanitation requirements in crowded neighbourhoods, although the announcement did not specify the deployment schedule for each ward or the operating agencies responsible for individual vehicles.

The initiative also includes battery-operated litter picker machines for cleaning roads and public spaces across all 250 MCD wards. These machines are intended to support routine removal of litter from streets and other public areas, extending the programme beyond door-to-door collection in the 25 South-East Delhi wards.

Gupta said the new resources would make Delhi’s waste-management process faster and support the government’s objective of creating a cleaner city. The chief minister has previously served as a councillor from North Pitampura and has experience of working with the MCD, according to the report.

The launch was attended by Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, Mayor Pravesh Wahi, Deputy Mayor Monika Pant and Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma, among others. Their presence placed the equipment rollout within the wider administrative structure responsible for municipal sanitation in the capital.

The announcement provides details of the equipment being introduced but does not state the total procurement cost, the expected service frequency, collection performance targets or the mechanism for tracking whether all listed vehicles and machines remain operational. The next operational milestone will be the deployment of these resources across the designated wards and the start of regular service under the MCD’s sanitation system.
