The Delhi Police has urged the public to avoid a proposed protest at Connaught Place on October 16, warning of strict action over the use of the national flag and possible disruption to business in the central Delhi commercial district.
In a statement, the police said prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force in Connaught Place and adjoining areas. The restrictions have been imposed to maintain peace and protect life and property, according to the police.
The New Delhi Municipal Council has informed the police that Central Park will remain closed to visitors on October 16 and 17 for administrative reasons. The civic body has also sought the deployment of security personnel in the area, which the police described as sensitive and congested.
Connaught Place is expected to see increased commercial activity during the festive season. The police said traders and market committees had raised concerns about the possible impact of the proposed protest on business. The concerns have also been brought before the Delhi High Court.
The police told the court that appropriate measures would be taken to address the concerns while managing the proposed gathering. It also said that flag-hoisting and patriotic activities could be held at a suitable venue, with due dignity and respect.
The restrictions and Central Park closure are expected to affect movement and access around the Connaught Place area during the period identified by the authorities. The police advisory comes ahead of the proposed protest and asks members of the public to stay away from the site.
The police said security arrangements would be made in response to the concerns raised by the civic body, traders and market committees. Central Park is scheduled to remain closed through October 17, while the prohibitory orders cover Connaught Place and adjoining areas.
