Coimbatore Science Centre Inauguration Needs Official Confirmation

Periyar Arivulagam and Science Centre site near Gandhipuram in Coimbatore

The proposed inauguration of the Periyar Arivulagam and Science Centre in Coimbatore has been reported for Friday, but the identity and official designation of the chief guest require confirmation before the event can be treated as established fact. The Times of India report said the facility at Gandhipuram would be inaugurated during a visit by a person it identified as Tamil Nadu chief minister “C Joseph Vijay”.

The report did not include an official government release, programme document or statement from the Tamil Nadu government confirming the dignitary’s identity or the inauguration schedule. That omission is significant because the reported event involves a public facility, senior government participation and a large security deployment.

According to the report, the programme is expected to include a public reception, inauguration of facilities, distribution of welfare assistance and other official engagements. The visiting dignitary is also expected to inspect facilities at the Periyar Knowledge Centre, including its library, children’s library and reading section.

The proposed centre is located on approximately seven acres of land belonging to the prison department on Nanjappa Road, opposite the Gandhipuram central bus stand. The report said the facility was initiated by the previous DMK government and that the Public Works Department began construction in November 2024.

The site’s location places the project within one of Coimbatore’s major public transport and commercial areas. The Gandhipuram central bus stand is a significant urban movement node, and the opening of a public library and science facility in its vicinity could bring the project into direct contact with students, commuters and residents using the area. The supplied report, however, does not provide details about the centre’s total cost, operational authority, opening hours, programming, staffing or expected visitor capacity.

The report also said security arrangements had been intensified across the city in anticipation of the visit. Barricades were reportedly erected along Avinashi Road and at locations including the airport, Peelamedu and Red Fields. Around 3,500 police personnel were said to have been deployed.

Following the Coimbatore programme, the dignitary was reported to be scheduled to travel from the Armed Reserve Police grounds to Thrissur in Kerala by helicopter. A dedicated helipad was being prepared for that purpose, according to the report.

The reported inauguration therefore involves two separate questions requiring confirmation: whether the Periyar Arivulagam and Science Centre is scheduled to open on Friday, and whether the person named in the report is the authorised chief guest and holds the designation attributed to him. Until the Tamil Nadu government, the Coimbatore district administration, the Public Works Department or the facility’s authorised representatives issue confirmation, those details should remain attributed to the Times of India report rather than presented as independently established facts.
