Chengalpattu Orange Alert as Tamil Nadu Rain Warning Expands

Chengalpattu orange alert during heavy rain over an urban road in Tamil Nadu

Chengalpattu has been placed under an orange alert for very heavy rain, while the Chennai Meteorological Centre has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Tamil Nadu districts between October 17 and October 20. The forecast includes Chennai and neighbouring districts, placing the wider northern Tamil Nadu region under a period of heightened rain risk.

According to a report by Dinamalar citing the Chennai Meteorological Centre, an atmospheric circulation is prevailing over parts of Tamil Nadu. Another circulation is present over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas, while a trough has formed over the Bay of Bengal to the northwest of that system. The weather systems are contributing to ongoing heavy rain in Tamil Nadu.

The forecast indicates that Chengalpattu is likely to receive very heavy rain on October 17. The district is part of the Chennai metropolitan region and includes rapidly urbanising areas, industrial zones and stretches of the East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road corridors. The report does not provide specific rainfall totals or details of local traffic, drainage or public-service restrictions.

For October 18, heavy rain has been forecast in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai districts. Puducherry is also included in the forecast for that day.

The October 19 forecast covers a large belt of northern, central and southern Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is expected in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli. Puducherry is again included.

On October 20, the weather centre has forecast very heavy rain in nine districts: the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari. The report attributes the multi-day spell to the atmospheric circulations and the Bay of Bengal trough, but does not announce any separate advisory on school closures, transport operations or municipal measures. Further local action will depend on official instructions issued by the relevant district and civic authorities.
