Bengaluru Smart Parking Brings Relief to Jayanagar Residents

Smart parking Bengaluru system on a busy Jayanagar commercial road with marked parking spaces and CCTV.

Smart parking in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar will not impose fees on residents who park vehicles in front of their homes, while charges will apply on selected commercial roads from 9am to 10pm, Bengaluru South City Corporation commissioner KN Ramesh said on Friday.

The system is expected to be implemented soon in the south Bengaluru locality to ease traffic congestion and improve the availability of designated parking spaces. The corporation will restrict the technology-enabled parking system to key commercial roads and will not extend it to residential stretches, Ramesh said.

The clarification followed concerns raised by representatives of the Jayanagar Traders’ Association over the proposed parking policy. The traders sought a reduction in parking fees and requested that motorists be allowed to park free of charge for the first 30 minutes.

Ramesh said the corporation would examine the practical implications of the traders’ demands before taking a decision. The final treatment of the requested fee reduction and free initial parking period has not been announced.

Under the proposed system, selected roads in Jayanagar will have CCTV surveillance, mobile-based information on real-time parking availability and variable message signboards. These features are intended to help motorists identify available designated spaces and provide the corporation with greater oversight of parking activity.

Representatives of Park Lens, the agency involved in the project, said the system would help motorists locate designated parking spaces while also curbing unauthorised parking. The arrangement is expected to separate parking management on busy commercial roads from residential parking outside residents’ homes.

The announcement places the corporation’s immediate focus on managing demand along Jayanagar’s commercial stretches, where parking charges will operate during the 9am-to-10pm period. The corporation is yet to announce the implementation date and the final fee structure for the selected roads.

The next steps are expected to include the corporation’s examination of the traders’ requests and the rollout of the CCTV, mobile information and variable-message-sign systems on the identified commercial roads.
