Trinamool Congress MLA Bibhas Sardar was reportedly attacked during a party programme in Mansatala under Jaynagar police station in West Bengal’s Baruipur East Assembly constituency on October 10, with his vehicle vandalised and the legislator admitted to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, according to Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal.
Sardar was present at the programme when a group of people allegedly surrounded him. The report said he was inside his vehicle when the attack took place. He suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. A CT scan has been conducted, and family members told the publication that he had injury marks on multiple parts of his body.
The legislator’s medical condition was still being monitored at the hospital when the report was published. The account did not provide a detailed medical bulletin or specify the extent of the injuries identified through the scan. It said Sardar continued to receive treatment at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Police deployed a large force both at the hospital and in the area where the incident took place after receiving information about the attack. The police have begun an investigation into the circumstances of the assault and the damage to the vehicle. The report did not state whether any arrests had been made or whether a formal case had been registered.
Sardar alleged that the attackers were linked to the ruling party and said they had attempted to kill him. “Those who carried out this incident are all miscreants of the ruling party. They tried to kill me,” he was quoted as saying. The allegation had not been independently established in the report, and no response from the alleged attackers was included.
The incident took place in a politically significant area represented by Sardar and has brought police presence to both the affected locality and the hospital where he was admitted. The report said BJP’s Jaynagar organisational district president Utpal Naskar was contacted for a response but did not answer the phone.
The police investigation is now expected to establish the sequence of events, identify those involved and determine the circumstances in which the MLA’s vehicle was vandalised. Further details on the investigation, arrests and Sardar’s medical condition were not available in the report.
