Bannerghatta Lake Road Collapse Sends Lorry Into Lake, Driver Escapes

Lorry overturned beside a collapsed road at a lake near Bannerghatta

A temporary earthen road built during lake development work collapsed at Bilvaradahalli near Bannerghatta in Bengaluru district on October 10, sending a lorry into the lake and forcing the driver to jump clear, according to a report by Prajavani.

The incident occurred within the Bannerghatta gram panchayat limits of Anekal taluk. The road had been formed along the lake embankment as part of work to develop Bilvaradahalli Lake. Soil had been placed on both sides of the embankment, but the surface gave way as the lorry approached, causing the driver to lose control and overturn into the lake.

The driver escaped without being trapped in the vehicle. Local residents spent about two hours working to pull the lorry back out of the lake, the report said.

The lake development work was being carried out using corporate social responsibility funding. Residents alleged that soil had been deposited along the lake edge without adequate technical planning, creating a risk that vehicles could lose control while using the road. Their concerns focused on the stability of the earthen surface and the absence of a protective retaining wall along the waterbody.

The incident highlights the immediate safety risks that can arise when temporary access roads are built beside lakes and embankments during civic or community-funded works. Without a stable edge and physical protection, a road failure can send vehicles towards the water, particularly when heavy vehicles use a surface designed or compacted inadequately.

Prajavani’s report did not provide details of the implementing company, the contractor, the project’s technical specifications, the cost of the work or any response from the gram panchayat or other authorities. It also did not report any injuries beyond stating that the driver escaped after jumping from the lorry. Further details on the road’s repair and the safety measures planned at the site were not available in the supplied report.
