Ambikapur Rope Barricade Accident Kills Biker, Organisers Booked

Ambikapur rope barricade accident scene near a temporary public event venue at night

A motorcyclist was killed and his companion injured after their bike struck a rope stretched across a road near a Durga Puja-Jagran venue at Jaystambh Chowk in Ambikapur, prompting police to book members of the organising committee and examine safety arrangements at the site.

The deceased was identified as Faizan Alam of Mayapur. Police said Alam was riding towards Jaystambh Chowk with his friend Sameer late Friday when the motorcycle allegedly hit the thick rope placed across the road to restrict traffic. Both riders fell after the collision.

Alam was taken to the medical college hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Sameer is undergoing treatment, according to the report. The incident has brought attention to how temporary traffic restrictions are installed and marked around public gatherings, particularly on roads used by two-wheelers and other local traffic.

Family members alleged that the rope was not sufficiently visible in the darkness and that the location did not have adequate lighting or warning arrangements. These allegations have not been independently established in the supplied report, while police are examining the lighting, barricading and other safety precautions used at the venue.

Alam’s brother separately alleged that a tent pole fell during the accident and that Alam may also have suffered an electric shock from wiring attached to it. Police have not confirmed that allegation. The separate claim means investigators are examining more than the motorcycle’s collision with the rope as they reconstruct the circumstances of the death.

Following protests by relatives and local residents, the jagran programme was stopped. The response also shifted the incident from a road collision to a wider public-safety question involving the management of a temporary event space, the diversion or restriction of traffic, and the visibility of obstacles placed across a public road.

Kotwali police registered a first information report against members of the organising committee under Sections 106(1), 125(a) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges follow the death, injury to the second rider and the circumstances in which the road was blocked near the venue.

Police are examining how the road restriction was authorised or implemented, whether adequate lighting and warning signs were provided, and whether the barricading arrangement met basic safety requirements. The investigation will also determine the relevance of the allegations concerning the tent pole and electrical wiring. No further findings were provided in the supplied report.
