Ahmedabad Road Safety Threat Grows as Tree Triggers 3 Crashes

Tree obstructing a newly built road on Ahmedabad’s Ramol Road, raising road safety concerns.

A large coconut tree standing in the middle of a newly asphalted road on Ahmedabad’s Ramol Road has reportedly contributed to three accidents, prompting traffic police to write to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seeking its urgent removal. The obstruction is located on the road linking Ramol Police Station and Ramol village with the S.P. Ring Road in the city’s eastern area.

According to Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad, the road carries heavy traffic throughout the day, including vehicles travelling to and from the CTM area. The new road was constructed at a cost described by the report as running into lakhs of rupees, but the tree in the centre of the carriageway was not removed or relocated during the work.

The report states that the road has a curve near the tree and that lighting is inadequate. The tree reportedly blocks or reduces the reach of streetlight illumination, making the obstruction difficult for motorists to identify until they are close to it. The risk is understood to be particularly high at night, when visibility is already reduced.

Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad reported that three minor or major accidents have taken place at the location because of the tree. The report did not provide details about the dates of the accidents, the vehicles involved or the extent of injuries. It also did not identify the specific AMC department responsible for the road work or confirm whether any formal accident assessment has been released.

The traffic police have written to the municipal corporation after repeated incidents, asking the civic body to remove the hazardous tree. The report does not specify the date of the letter or record a response from AMC officials. It also does not clarify whether the tree is planned to be cut, transplanted or protected through a redesign of the road layout.

Local residents told the publication that they had previously submitted complaints about the obstruction, but alleged that AMC officials and engineers had not conducted a site inspection. Their concerns focus on the decision to complete the road surfacing while leaving a large tree in the centre of the route, creating a fixed hazard on a road used by thousands of vehicles.

The case highlights an immediate coordination issue in road construction: carriageway design, tree management, street lighting and traffic safety must be resolved together before a road is opened to regular traffic. In this instance, the available report records the presence of the obstruction, three accidents and a traffic police request, but does not establish what action AMC will take or when the road will be made safe.

The next step rests with the municipal corporation, which has been asked by traffic police to address the tree and the associated visibility problem. No official timeline for removal, relocation or redesign was provided in the report.
