A five-year-old boy died after being hit by a car near the Telephone Exchange crossroads at Gulbai Tekra in Ahmedabad, with police registering a case against the woman who was driving the vehicle. The child was taken to two hospitals after the crash, but died during treatment.
According to a report by Divya Bhaskar, the accident occurred on October 18 when the boy, identified as Nilesh, was near the Gulbai Tekra area with his grandmother to collect a packet. The report states that Nilesh was crossing the road near the Telephone Exchange crossroads when he was hit by a car allegedly travelling at high speed.
The collision left the child seriously injured. After the accident, the driver, identified in the report as Mala Mittal, a resident of Shela, got out of the car and took Nilesh to nearby Synergy Hospital. She also assured the family that she would bear the cost of his treatment, according to the report.
As the child’s condition became more serious, he was shifted to Apple Children’s Hospital near the Parimal Garden crossroads. Nilesh died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The child’s father, Mahesh Rathod, who earns a living by selling belts as a street vendor, lodged a complaint against the driver. The report says traffic police registered a case against Mala Mittal and began further investigation. It also identifies her as Mala Rajesh Mittal in the account of the complaint.
The report refers to action by the B Division Traffic Police and separately mentions Navrangpura Police Station in connection with the complaint. Police are expected to examine the circumstances of the collision, the sequence of events at the crossroads and the conduct of the driver after the crash.
The death brings renewed attention to the risks faced by pedestrians at busy Ahmedabad junctions, particularly children and families crossing roads on foot. In this case, the reported crash occurred at a crossroads near a telephone exchange and involved a child who had been out with a family member. The immediate police investigation will establish the circumstances of the collision and the allegations recorded in the case.
The case remains under investigation, with the police proceeding against the driver under the complaint lodged by the child’s father.
