The Ladakh administration has dissolved the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, with immediate effect after the resignation of its chief executive councillor, three executive councillors and six other councillors.
An order issued late on Wednesday by Shurbir Singh, commissioner-secretary of the Ladakh Revenue Department, said the council had been dissolved and ceased to exist. The order was issued on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena under the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Act, 1997.
The order further stated that the former chief executive councillor, executive councillors and all elected or nominated members of the council would no longer hold office. They have also been barred from exercising any powers associated with their previous positions.
The development comes as Ladakh’s administrative structure is being reorganised. Parts of the former Kargil district have been separated to create new districts, including Drass, Zanskar and Sankoo. The source report did not specify how the council’s administrative responsibilities will be managed following its dissolution or when a new institutional arrangement will be announced.
The Kargil Hill Council was established as a local governance institution under the 1997 legislation. Its dissolution removes the existing elected and nominated council structure from office at a time when the territorial and administrative organisation of the region is changing.
The order takes immediate effect. Further decisions on the administration of Kargil and the functioning of the newly created districts will determine how local governance powers are assigned during the transition.
