Pune Municipal Corporation has ordered urgent road improvements along Ganeshkhind Road and the Baner Road corridor after raising concerns over incomplete work and construction quality beneath the Metro Line 3A alignment. The repairs, median restoration, road levelling and beautification work must be completed before the Pune Grand Tour 2027 cycling event scheduled for January.
The directions were issued during a senior officials’ meeting that reviewed road works on the Metro Line 3A route between District Court and Balewadi. The review covered the condition of Ganeshkhind and Baner roads, the state of traffic medians, traffic management and road safety. The municipal administration expressed dissatisfaction with deficiencies in the ongoing work being carried out by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and instructed the concerned agencies to improve the sites.
Around 4.5 kilometres of the Pune Grand Tour route will require median repairs and completion of remaining works by November 30, 2026. Other pending works and necessary improvements have been given a deadline of December 31, 2026, according to the report. The instructions also require the quality of the completed work to be maintained.
Ganeshkhind Road is part of the cycling event’s route and is currently affected by Metro construction. The road surface is uneven in places, while damaged medians and unfinished works have created inconvenience in the area. Pune Municipal Commissioner Navalkishor Ram said the work must be completed quickly and to a good standard.
The civic administration has also directed agencies to remove construction debris, excess material and obstructions from footpaths on the stretch between Sancheti Hospital and Balewadi. Unnecessary material, barricades and signboards at locations where work has been completed must be removed within a week. The meeting also called for improvements near pedestrian facilities, cycle routes, key junctions and U-turns to make the corridor safer and more orderly.
A joint working group comprising the Pune Municipal Corporation’s road department, PMRDA, Tata Projects and the traffic police will be formed to monitor the pending works. The group will review progress regularly and submit weekly reports to senior officials. The deadlines place responsibility on multiple agencies to coordinate road restoration and traffic-safety measures along a corridor where Metro construction and daily urban movement are continuing simultaneously.
