Noida Elevated Road Closed After Concrete Fails, IIT Probe Ordered

Noida Elevated Road closed near ISKCON Temple after concrete damage exposed steel beneath the surface

Noida Elevated Road traffic between Sector 61 and Sector 18 was stopped on October 21 after a section of the concrete surface broke away near the ISKCON Temple in Sector 33, exposing the steel structure underneath. The Noida Authority has ordered a technical inspection, while repairs are expected to take eight to 10 days, according to a report by Navbharat Times – Noida.

The affected stretch has been barricaded to prevent vehicles from passing over the damaged section. Traffic police have asked motorists to avoid the elevated road and use the MP-2 road below it instead. The route will be reopened only after the repair work is completed and the structure is considered safe for traffic.

The damage was reported on the approximately 4.8-km elevated road that connects Sector 18 with Sector 62 and is one of Noida’s key traffic corridors. Built at a reported cost of about Rs 480 crore, the road was intended to reduce pressure on busy surface routes and provide faster movement across the city.

According to the report, the concrete layer near the ISKCON Temple deteriorated and came away, leaving the steel structure visible. The incident prompted immediate traffic restrictions and safety barricading. The report did not establish whether the damage affected the structural integrity of the elevated road; that assessment has been assigned to the technical inspection team.

The Noida Authority has directed IIT Roorkee and the Bridge Corporation to examine the damaged portion. The experts are expected to assess why the concrete surface failed, determine whether the underlying steel has been affected and evaluate the condition of the structure. Further repair and safety measures will be decided after the inspection report is prepared.

The closure is likely to affect daily movement on a corridor used by thousands of vehicles, particularly during peak hours when traffic pressure is already high. Motorists travelling between Sector 61 and Sector 18 will have to shift to the road below the elevated structure, potentially increasing traffic on the alternative route. Traffic police have issued the diversion appeal as part of the immediate safety response.

The latest incident follows a separate reported case last month in which a major portion of the Noida Elevated Road sank. The recurrence has brought renewed attention to the road’s construction quality and maintenance, although the cause of the current damage has not yet been determined. The technical inspection is expected to establish whether the latest failure resulted from a surface defect, maintenance issue or another structural factor.

The elevated road will remain closed on the affected route during the repair and inspection period. Authorities will decide on reopening after the damaged section is repaired and the safety assessment is completed.
