Four migrant road construction workers were killed and six others seriously injured after their pickup truck crashed into the side wall of an underpass and overturned on the Nashik-Pune highway near Dodi village in Maharashtra’s Sinnar taluka around 3am on Saturday.
The workers were returning from a road construction site when the crash occurred, according to the report. Police said the vehicle had travelled about five kilometres from the worksite before approaching the underpass. The driver apparently lost control, causing the pickup to hit the underpass side barrier and overturn.
One worker died at the scene. Two others died while being taken to hospital, while a fourth victim succumbed during treatment. The six injured workers are receiving treatment at private hospitals in Nashik.
Police investigating the case said three workers seated in the rear of the pickup were thrown into the air and fell from the underpass. The vehicle then overturned, throwing the remaining occupants onto the road. The account was provided by constable Rahul Nirgude, who is investigating the accident.
The deceased were identified as Md Bisu Asamuddin, 25, Sajeman Ali Sajibur Rahman, 21, and Khurshid Alim Abdul Rahim, 19, all from Malda in West Bengal. The fourth victim was identified as Abdul Mohammad Hussain Kalam, 22, from Kishanganj in Bihar.
Emergency response teams reached the location shortly after the crash. Purushottam Bhatjire, an ambulance driver and functionary of the Shiv Sena Vaidyakiya Madat Kaksha in Sinnar, said he received the emergency call at around 3.10am. He and fellow ambulance drivers Munna Pathan, Ganesh Gaikwad and Rushi Gade shifted the victims to different hospitals.
The crash involved workers engaged in road construction, but the report did not provide details about the vehicle’s seating capacity, safety equipment, working arrangements or the specific construction project from which the workers were returning. These details remain relevant to any assessment of whether transport and worker-safety rules were followed.
Wavi police have registered a case against the pickup truck driver for allegedly causing death due to negligence. The investigation will determine the circumstances that led to the loss of control and the subsequent deaths and injuries.
