TGSRTC Union Recognition Delayed After 98% Election Turnout

The winning alliance in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) recognised union elections has not yet received its formal recognition certificate, after the Labour Department reportedly did not complete the process on October 17.

The certificate was expected to be issued to the winning alliance following the elections held last week, but the formal proceedings were not completed on Saturday, according to sources cited in the report. The recognition process is expected to take place on another date.

The election process is associated with Joint Labour Commissioner Sunitha Gopal Das, while the Labour Department is responsible for completing the formalities and issuing the certificate. The report did not specify a revised date for the recognition proceedings or give a reason for the delay.

The delay follows a closely contested election that marked the return of recognised union elections at TGSRTC after a gap of nearly a decade. The high participation rate has highlighted the significance of the process for the corporation’s workforce and its formal employee-representation structure.

Of TGSRTC’s 34,905 employees, 34,182 exercised their franchise. Voting took place at 115 polling centres covering 97 depots across the corporation’s network, resulting in a turnout of about 98 per cent.

The elected alliance’s formal recognition certificate is an important administrative step because it records the outcome of the union election and completes the recognition process under the Labour Department’s supervision. Until the certificate is issued, the election result remains awaiting formal documentation, although the report identifies the alliance as the winner.

TGSRTC operates the bus services that connect Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, making the administration of its workforce a matter linked to the functioning of a major public transport institution. The report, however, does not provide details of any operational disruption or service impact arising from the pending certificate.

The Labour Department is expected to complete the formal proceedings on another date. No further details on the schedule were available in the report.
