Bengaluru University Student Death Triggers Police Negligence Case

Bengaluru university student death case linked to a private campus administrative building

A 20-year-old B.Tech student died after falling from the sixth floor of an administrative block at a private university near Nagandenahalli in Bengaluru Rural district on Thursday night, prompting police to register a case against the person in charge of the building under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The deceased has been identified as S. Varshini, a native of Andhra Pradesh and a third-year B.Tech student. The incident occurred at around 9 p.m., according to a senior police officer quoted by The Hindu.

Police have registered the case under Section 106 of the BNS, which deals with causing death by negligence. The case is against the person responsible for the administrative block where the incident took place.

The police are also examining how Varshini gained access to the building. The officer said it was unclear how she had been allowed to enter the administrative block, making access control and supervision at the university part of the investigation.

No note has been recovered so far, the officer said. Police have taken Varshini’s books and study materials for examination as they look for possible leads into the circumstances preceding her death.

According to the officer, Varshini had messaged her parents before the incident, writing, “I love you, Dad. I love you, Mom.” The message has been cited as part of the information being examined by the police. The Hindu report did not establish a motive.

The case places attention on the responsibilities of private educational institutions to control access to restricted buildings and maintain safeguards in areas that may not be intended for routine student movement. The police action will determine whether negligence contributed to the death and whether the building’s access arrangements complied with institutional procedures.

The incident also highlights the need for universities to respond to student distress through accessible counselling and support systems, while ensuring that such services do not substitute for basic physical safety and supervision on campus. The available report does not provide details of the university’s internal safety protocols, counselling arrangements or response after the incident.

The investigation remains underway. Police are examining the circumstances of the death, the student’s study materials and the access arrangements at the administrative block.
