Delhi Riot Case: Court Gives Tahir Hussain 2-Year Jail Term

Karkardooma Court in the Delhi riot case involving Tahir Hussain

A Delhi court has sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain to two years in prison and fined him Rs 10,000 for abetment of rioting in a case linked to the February 2020 north-east Delhi riots.

The sentence was delivered by the Karkardooma Court in a case registered at the Dayalpur police station over violence in the Dayalpur area. The case involved allegations that a shop was vandalised, looted and set on fire during the riots on February 24, 2020.

The court had convicted Hussain in the case on October 10. Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh held him guilty under Section 147 read with Section 109 of the Indian Penal Code. The court acquitted nine other accused of all charges in the case, according to the report by Live Hindustan – NCR.

The complaint was filed by Irshad Ali, who said that rioters broke open the shutter of the shop where he worked before looting goods and setting the premises on fire. The complaint estimated the loss of goods at around Rs 17 lakh to Rs 18 lakh. Damage to the building was estimated at approximately Rs 10 lakh.

Another complainant, Mohammad Zahid, alleged that rioters were raising slogans in Hussain’s name and claiming to be associated with him. The court’s conviction and sentence in this case relate to the offence established under the provisions cited in the judgment. The report does not provide the full text of the court’s sentencing order or details of any appeal filed against it.

The sentence comes in addition to a life imprisonment term that Hussain is already serving in another case arising from the 2020 riots. The report said that the Karkardooma Court convicted Hussain and four others in July 2026 in the murder case involving Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma. Hussain was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment in that matter.

The February 2020 violence in north-east Delhi resulted in 53 deaths and injuries to several other people. It also caused extensive damage to homes, shops, commercial establishments and other property in affected neighbourhoods. The cases arising from the violence have proceeded through separate criminal investigations and trials, with outcomes depending on the evidence and charges in each case.

The latest sentencing illustrates how the legal process is addressing individual incidents from the riots years after the violence occurred. In this case, the court’s order covers allegations relating to a specific shop, the reported losses and the accused named in the Dayalpur police case. Further legal developments will depend on the complete order and any appeal or other proceedings filed by the parties.
