GMR Aero Technic Expands Aircraft Modification Work in Hyderabad

Aircraft modification solutions at a Hyderabad aviation maintenance facility

GMR Aero Technic has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada-based Logic Air Inc to provide aircraft modification, engineering, certification and obsolescence solutions for operators in India and overseas markets, strengthening Hyderabad’s role in aviation maintenance and technical services.

The agreement brings together GMR Aero Technic’s maintenance, repair and overhaul infrastructure with Logic Air’s expertise in aircraft modification, systems integration and certification. The companies said they intend to offer turnkey modification packages during scheduled maintenance, aircraft redelivery programmes and transition checks.

According to the companies, the arrangement is designed to reduce aircraft downtime for airlines, lessors and cargo operators. The partners will assess, validate and adapt eligible Logic Air supplemental type certificates and modification data for Indian and international operators. The initial target markets include India, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

The partnership will also focus on creating local capability in installation, training, sustainment and through-life support in India. Commercial terms will be agreed separately for each project, according to the announcement.

The initial work areas include navigation and operational upgrades for Boeing 737NG aircraft, modernisation of engine indication systems on ATR and Dash 8 aircraft, cabin electrical and structural changes, and modifications for Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. The companies will also explore freighter conversion support, component obsolescence solutions, on-wing support, training and international market development.

Aircraft modification work is closely linked to the operating life and utilisation of existing fleets. Supplemental type certificates provide the technical and regulatory basis for approved modifications, while installation and maintenance capabilities determine how efficiently those changes can be carried out during planned aircraft downtime. The agreement therefore combines design and certification expertise with an established maintenance setting rather than treating modification as a standalone activity.

Ashok Gopinath, president of GMR Aero Technic, said the partnership would help provide integrated solutions alongside maintenance and aircraft transition programmes. Prashanth Rajanna, executive director of strategy and global business development at Logic Air, said the collaboration would aim to deliver cost-effective, turnkey solutions, extend aircraft operational life, address obsolescence challenges and improve fleet performance.

Rajanna described the arrangement as a platform for Canadian aerospace engineering and innovation to support aviation markets in India, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. The companies have not disclosed project-wise commercial values, specific customer contracts or implementation timelines. The next steps will depend on the assessment of eligible modification data and the agreement of commercial terms for individual projects.
