Pune Municipal Hospital Faces Action Over Medicines Kept in Tin Shed

Pune municipal hospital medicines stored in a tin shed during an inspection

Pune Municipal Hospital medicines were found stored in an untidy tin shed during an unannounced inspection at the Amrale dispensary in Shivajinagar, prompting Mayor Manjusha Nagpure to order an inquiry and action against those responsible, according to a report by Lokmat – Pune.

Nagpure visited the Pune Municipal Corporation-run Amrale dispensary on Thursday morning, October 15, to inspect its daily medical operations, patient facilities, cleanliness and medicine stock. During the visit, medicines meant for patients were found kept in a tin room instead of being stored in a secure location with suitable temperature conditions, the report said.

The storage arrangement raised concerns because medicines can require controlled and appropriate conditions to preserve their quality. Lokmat reported that the heat and unfavourable conditions inside the tin shed could put the quality of the medicines at risk. The report did not specify the names, quantities or types of medicines found there.

The mayor expressed strong displeasure to the health officials present during the inspection and reprimanded them over the arrangement. She said that negligence affecting citizens who depend on municipal dispensaries would not be tolerated, according to the report.

Nagpure directed the administration to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and establish responsibility for the lapse. She also ordered that a report be submitted and that the responsible officials or other personnel face administrative action under applicable rules.

The inspection also covered the dispensary’s routine medical work, patient amenities and sanitation arrangements. The report identified the storage of medicines in the tin room as the main issue highlighted during the visit.

The mayor further instructed officials to immediately shift the entire medicine stock from the tin room to a safe and appropriate location. She directed the health administration to restore the dispensary’s arrangements without delay.

The incident places attention on the municipal health system’s basic storage and monitoring practices. While the report described a potential risk to medicine quality, it did not state that any medicine had been declared damaged, withdrawn or administered to patients after being compromised. The outcome of the ordered inquiry and the administration’s action against those found responsible remain awaited.
