Delhi rain brought a sharp change in weather on Thursday, lowering the capital’s maximum temperature by more than six degrees in some areas and providing relief from the heat, while the India Meteorological Department forecast light rain on Friday before clearer conditions for Dussehra.
The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 28.3°C, 4.9 degrees below normal. The steepest fall was reported in the Ridge area, where the temperature dropped by 6.3°C. The minimum temperature, however, remained above normal at 23.3°C, or 3.7 degrees higher than the seasonal average.
Rain began in parts of the city around noon, initially as a light spell. Around 1 pm, dark clouds gathered and rainfall intensified, accompanied by gusty winds moving at 40 to 50 kmph. The rain continued intermittently, ranging from light to moderate in different parts of the capital, until approximately 2.30 pm. Some motorists were seen using headlights during the afternoon as cloud cover reduced visibility.
By 5.30 pm, Delhi had recorded 15.9 mm of rainfall. The city’s cumulative rainfall for October had reached 57.5 mm, more than three times the monthly average of 15.1 mm, even though the month was only halfway through.
The weather change was linked to an active western disturbance over north Punjab and a cyclonic circulation around southern Haryana, according to the weather department. These systems contributed to the cloud cover, gusty winds and rain over Delhi and surrounding areas.
The high humidity accompanying the rain ranged from 76% to 100%. The combination of wet roads, strong winds, reduced daylight and heavy cloud cover created short-term visibility challenges for road users during the afternoon spell, although the report did not specify any major disruption or damage.
The weather department has forecast the possibility of light rain on Friday. It has also indicated that rain is unlikely between 17 and 22 October. This points to clearer conditions on 20 October, when Dussehra will be observed in the capital and outdoor events, including Ravan effigy-burning ceremonies, are scheduled to take place.
For residents and event organisers, the immediate concern remains the possibility of another short rain spell on Friday. The next significant weather milestone is the expected dry period from 17 October, including the forecast of clear weather for Dussehra.
