Karimnagar Municipal Commissioner Praful Desai inspected the city’s dumping yard on October 14 after minor fires and smoke were reported at the site, directing municipal and fire department officials to maintain round-the-clock vigilance and prevent further incidents.
Desai visited the yard with engineering, sanitation and fire department officials to assess conditions on the ground. He remained at the site while municipal staff and fire personnel coordinated efforts to extinguish the fires, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle.
Officials and staff were instructed to take necessary precautions to ensure that no further fire or smoke emerges from the dumping yard. The inspection focused on the immediate control of the incidents as well as measures intended to reduce inconvenience to the public.
Desai said the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation was giving special attention to sanitation management and environmental protection. He also stated that smoke levels at the yard had reduced significantly and that measures were being taken to address the problems at the site.
The municipal corporation is undertaking bio-mining operations to reduce the accumulated waste at the dumping yard. Additional bio-mining machinery is being installed to accelerate the process, the report said.
Bio-mining involves processing accumulated waste to reduce the volume of legacy refuse at a dumping site. In Karimnagar, the ongoing operation is now being linked by the municipal corporation to efforts to prevent further fire and smoke incidents, although the report did not provide details on the total quantity of waste, the area covered by the operation or the expected completion date.
The latest inspection places immediate fire control alongside longer-term waste reduction at the site. The municipal administration’s next operational steps are to keep staff and fire officials alert, complete the installation of additional machinery and continue bio-mining work at the dumping yard.
