The West Bengal Cabinet has approved recruitment to 45,185 posts across several state departments, including school education, panchayat and rural development, police and technical education. The recruitment process is expected to begin soon, according to Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari, who announced the decision after a special Cabinet meeting at Nabanna on Wednesday.
The approval covers vacancies and newly created posts in departments that directly deliver public services. The largest share is in the School Education Department, where 33,199 posts have been identified. These include 4,432 primary teacher posts, 6,052 upper-primary posts, 12,343 assistant teacher posts and 4,394 headmaster posts.
The Cabinet has also approved 7,119 vacancies in the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. The department is responsible for implementing a range of local-level administrative and rural development functions, making staffing levels relevant to the delivery of services outside the state’s major urban centres.
The police department will recruit 996 people, while the Technical Education Department has 1,886 vacant posts, the report said. Together, the department-wise figures identified in the announcement account for 43,200 positions. The report does not provide the department-wise details of the remaining 1,985 posts included in the overall total.
Adhikari said the recruitment process would be initiated quickly and conducted according to established rules. The Cabinet approval is the administrative decision permitting the recruitment proposal to move forward; the report does not specify examination dates, selection bodies, application deadlines or appointment timelines.
The announcement is significant for two reasons. It places school staffing at the centre of the recruitment decision, with teacher and headmaster positions making up most of the posts whose details were disclosed. It also links recruitment to departments that shape local administration, rural development, technical education and public safety.
For applicants, the next important information will be the publication of formal recruitment notifications. Those notices are expected to establish eligibility conditions, the relevant recruiting authorities, application procedures, examination arrangements and the schedule for appointments. None of those operational details were provided in the Cabinet announcement as reported.
The state government’s immediate next step, according to the Chief Minister, is to begin the recruitment process under the applicable rules. Further details will depend on notifications issued by the concerned departments and recruiting authorities.
