IIT Hyderabad Semiconductor Collaboration Opens Japan Research Link

IIT Hyderabad semiconductor collaboration with Mie University focused on research and student exchanges

IIT Hyderabad and Japan’s Mie University have signed two memoranda of understanding to expand academic and research cooperation between India and Japan, with a focus on semiconductors, digital technologies, student exchanges and faculty collaboration.

The agreements provide a framework for joint research, academic information sharing, lectures, symposia and exchange programmes involving students, faculty and staff, according to a statement cited in the announcement.

Under the partnership, students from the two institutions will be able to take part in exchange programmes lasting one or two consecutive academic semesters, subject to conditions agreed by the universities. The agreements also provide for cooperation between researchers and academic staff in areas covered by the partnership.

The collaboration places semiconductors at the centre of the proposed academic relationship. Mie University has a dedicated semiconductor division, while Mie Prefecture is an established semiconductor industry hub in Japan. The institutional link is therefore intended to connect academic and research activity at IIT Hyderabad with expertise and industry relationships associated with the Japanese region.

The universities said the partnership is expected to support the development of skilled professionals and research in semiconductors and related digital technologies. The agreements also create a channel for lectures, symposia and joint projects, allowing researchers and students to work across the two institutions.

Prof. Hideto Miyake, professor and assistant to the president of Mie University, said the partnership would create opportunities for students and young researchers while strengthening ties with industry. His comments underline the proposed role of the agreements in connecting academic programmes with companies and organisations in the semiconductor sector.

IIT Hyderabad Director Prof. B S Murty said the memoranda would help students, faculty and researchers work together and connect academic strengths with industry needs. The statement did not provide details of specific semiconductor projects, participating companies, research funding or a timetable for individual joint initiatives.

The agreements come as both institutions seek to deepen cooperation through academic mobility and research. Their immediate implementation will depend on the conditions agreed for exchanges and the development of individual lectures, symposia and joint research activities.
