Nizamabad Power Demand Surges 68% as Heat Strains Grid

Nizamabad power demand strains distribution infrastructure in Telangana

Nizamabad power demand has risen sharply in Telangana amid deficient rainfall and prolonged heat, putting distribution transformers under severe stress and prompting the Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TG NPDCL) to intensify measures to maintain electricity supply.

TG NPDCL data cited in the report shows that electricity consumption in the Nizamabad circle increased by 3.53 per cent in July and August 2026 compared with the same period last year. The rise reached 53.83 per cent in September and 68.01 per cent between October 1 and October 12.

Peak power demand touched 767 MW in September. Average daily consumption in October increased from 6.38 million units in 2025 to 11.25 million units this year. The utility attributed the increase to agricultural pump sets being used by farmers, along with higher demand from air-conditioners and coolers in homes and offices.

Officials said high ambient temperatures, inadequate cooling and the simultaneous starting of agricultural pump sets were contributing to transformer failures and excessive inrush currents. The combination is placing additional pressure on the local distribution network at a time when electricity use has moved well above normal levels.

TG NPDCL has established round-the-clock control rooms at the division, circle and corporate-office levels. Special officers have been deployed for field monitoring, while nodal officers are overseeing TG NPDCL and TG TRANSCO substations. Mobile transformers have been kept ready at district headquarters to speed up restoration when equipment fails.

Consumers can report transformer-related complaints through the toll-free number 1912. The number has been displayed on transformers and their plinths, according to the report.

The response is supported by network strengthening carried out between December 2023 and September 2026. TG NPDCL added two 33/11 kV substations, 13 km of 33 kV lines, 269 km of 11 kV lines, 369 km of low-tension lines and 3,381 distribution transformers during that period. The utility also added 22 power transformers.

Of 15 new 33/11 kV substations sanctioned in the circle, four have been commissioned and two are ready for charging. Work on the remaining nine substations is in progress. The utility has also completed 39 interlinking lines covering 158.58 km, allowing loads to be transferred between feeders during supply disruptions.

To improve power factor and reduce reactive power demand, TG NPDCL has installed 288 capacitor banks. Of these, 222 are at substations and 66 are on feeders.

The utility’s 2027 summer action plan proposes four more substations, 10 power transformers, one 33 kV feeder, 24 new 11 kV feeders, 468 distribution transformers and 28 additional capacitor banks. These planned works are intended to strengthen capacity before the next summer demand period.
