JNU Sexual Harassment FIR Filed Against Congress MP Akoijam

JNU campus in Delhi linked to the sexual harassment FIR against former professor Bimol Akoijam

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor, after allegations of sexual harassment involving students at the university. The case follows JNU’s decision to dismiss Akoijam after an internal inquiry into the complaints.

The FIR, dated October 11, was registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station on a complaint by JNU Chief Security Officer. It names Akoijam under provisions relating to sexual harassment, making sexually coloured remarks, and words, gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. Police said the investigation is under way.

According to officials cited in the FIR, around 10 to 12 students from the Centre for Study of Social Systems had filed a sexual harassment complaint against Akoijam. The alleged incidents are stated to have taken place between July 2025 and May 2026 at the Centre for Studies of Social System, the School of Social Sciences and other locations.

The police action followed a communication sent by JNU’s Chief Security Officer to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj North. The communication forwarded documents submitted by the university’s Internal Committee and requested legal action in the matter.

As described in the FIR, the Internal Committee examined accounts from complainants, witness statements, defence witnesses and other material placed before it. The committee’s cumulative assessment, cited in the police communication, said it did not view the matter as an isolated incident but referred to an alleged recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interaction, sexually suggestive conduct and unwelcome physical contact.

The assessment also referred to an alleged “intimidating and hostile learning environment” and “inadequate professional boundaries in interactions with female students”. JNU had dismissed Akoijam from his position as a professor of the School of Social Sciences the previous Friday after the inquiry.

Akoijam is the Congress MP from Inner Manipur. The case has also acquired a political dimension, with the BJP Mahila Morcha protesting against him in Delhi. The FIR and the university’s internal proceedings are separate processes: the police investigation will determine whether the allegations meet the requirements for criminal prosecution, while the university’s action followed its own institutional inquiry.

The registration of an FIR does not establish guilt, and the allegations remain subject to investigation and due legal process. Police have not announced further procedural steps beyond confirming that the investigation is continuing.
