Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is preparing to revise parking charges across the city, with proposed rates varying by parking type, zone and traffic demand. The plan could raise the hourly charge for two-wheelers to ₹20 and for cars to ₹40 in high-density traffic demand areas, although the new rates will apply only after approval by the civic body’s committees and General Board.
The proposal seeks to replace parking rates fixed in 2015-16 with a differentiated system for multilevel, off-street, on-street and underbridge parking. Under the proposed schedule, a two-wheeler parked in multilevel or off-street facilities would cost ₹10 for the first hour, compared with the current ₹5. The first-hour charge for a car would rise from ₹15 to ₹20.
The highest rates have been proposed for high-density traffic demand areas. In these locations, the first-hour charge would be ₹20 for a two-wheeler and ₹40 for a car. For parking between one and three hours, the proposed charges are ₹40 and ₹80 respectively. The rates would increase to ₹60 and ₹120 for three to six hours, ₹80 and ₹160 for six to 12 hours, and ₹100 and ₹250 for 12 to 24 hours.
For multilevel and off-street parking, the proposed charges for one to three hours are ₹20 for a two-wheeler and ₹40 for a car. The rates would rise to ₹35 and ₹80 for three to six hours, ₹50 and ₹120 for six to 12 hours, and ₹70 and ₹170 for 12 to 24 hours.
The proposal also separates rates for different municipal zones in ordinary on-street and underbridge parking. In the central, north-west, south-west and west zones, the first-hour rates proposed for two-wheelers and cars are ₹15 and ₹30. In the east, north and south zones, the corresponding rates are ₹10 and ₹20. For the longer 12-to-24-hour period, the proposed charges in the first group of zones are ₹80 for two-wheelers and ₹200 for cars, compared with ₹70 and ₹170 in the second group.
The revised schedule would also introduce separate charges for three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles. At multilevel and off-street facilities, the proposed first-hour charges are ₹15 for three-wheelers and ₹50 for light commercial vehicles. In ordinary on-street parking, three-wheelers would be charged ₹20 to ₹30 depending on the zone, while light commercial vehicles would pay ₹50 to ₹60. In high-density areas, the proposed first-hour rates are ₹30 and ₹60.
Commercial vehicle charges would also increase with longer parking durations. In high-density areas, the proposed 12-to-24-hour charge is ₹600 for medium commercial vehicles and ₹900 for heavy commercial vehicles. At multilevel and off-street facilities, the corresponding charges are ₹400 and ₹600.
The proposal gives the deputy municipal commissioner of each zone the authority to identify high-density traffic demand areas based on parking requirements. On-street parking locations would additionally require a no-objection certificate from the traffic police. According to the report, the proposal will first be placed before the Town Planning Committee and then the Standing Committee before being submitted to the General Board. The revised rates can be implemented only after General Board approval.
